Fasting Done Your Way:
Find Your Right Approach to Get the
Most Benefits from Intermittent Fasting
It’s time to dive into the latest (and oldest) lifestyle choice that has loads of research supporting the myriad health benefits this practice conveys: Intermittent Fasting (IF).
IF can mean many different things but at its core, it is the recognition that going for extended periods without food is health supportive. Some of you may panic as you think of the traditional water only fasting that goes on for weeks at a time and where people experience fainting and requires medical supervision.
Modern-day fasting is much more gentle and yet provides for the same health outcomes:
Improved blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity
Improved cognition due to increased production of messengers that promote neuro-regeneration called BDNF
Increased energy via renewal of mitochondria within each cell
Reduction in oxidative stress (“rust” in our body)
Support for deep cleaning process within the body called Autophagy where old, dysfunctional cells are recycled
Stabilization towards ideal weight
Those who are experiencing any of the following:
brain fog/cognitive decline
elevated blood sugar
low energy
weight loss resistance
fatty liver (NAFL)
high cholesterol
metabolic syndrome
People who experience low blood sugar and/or HPA axis dysregulation will need to address these concerns before attempting any type of fasting. If you need to eat every 2-3 hours in order to avoid energy crashes, shaky hands, irritation, or mental fog then you are not yet ready for IF.
People on insulin need to get approval from prescribing physician and set up monitoring system to make sure changes in need for insulin are accommodated by adjustment in medication.
Advanced stages of cancer where cachexia is present.
