About Julie Wendt, MS, CNS, LDN

Julie Wendt, Certified Nutrition Specialist in Maryland and Washington DC.A woman with long brown hair and a blue sweater smiling in a kitchen surrounded by fresh vegetables and fruits.

My interest in health began in earnest during my first pregnancy, when the role of food as medicine became undeniably clear. My colicky newborn graphically illustrated the concept that what you eat can make a huge difference in how you feel and what your body can tolerate. With each new family member, the message became more clear: food matters.

After serving as my family's nutritionist for over a decade, I decided to combine my passion for food, my gift for healing, and my desire to help others and build a practice rooted in what I had seen firsthand. That is how Julie Wendt Nutrition was born.

Today I work with women across Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia who are tired of not getting answers and ready for a different kind of care. I bring clinical training, functional medicine expertise, and a genuine belief that your body is capable of more than you have been told.

My Approach

I offer functional nutrition counseling rooted in a simple and compelling belief: the human body has powerful healing capacities that, when supported, can bring a person to their optimal state of health.

My approach starts with data. Before I make a single recommendation, I want to understand what is actually happening in your body,  through your health history, your symptoms, and advanced functional lab testing that goes far beyond a standard panel. I look for patterns, upstream causes, and the connections between systems that conventional medicine often misses.

The foundations of diet and lifestyle are so powerful that even the most seemingly unrelated health concern can shift with improvements in five key areas: food choices and timing, sleep quality and quantity, exercise and movement balance, stress management tools, and supportive connections with friends and family. That is why I love what I do. We can make empowered choices that have a dramatic effect on your daily health.

I work at the intersection of gut health, hormonal balance, metabolic function, and nutritional status, because these systems do not operate in isolation. Your gut influences your mood. Your nutrient levels influence your hormones. Your genes influence how you respond to food, stress, and lifestyle choices. My job is to help you understand those connections and build a plan that works with your unique biology, not against it.

I also work within a psychiatry practice, which gives me a perspective on the relationship between mental health and nutrition that most nutritionists simply do not have. For many of my clients, addressing gut health and nutritional imbalances has a direct and meaningful impact on anxiety, depression, and cognitive clarity.

This is not generic nutrition advice. It is personalized, evidence-based, clinically guided care.

Who I Work With

I work with health-conscious women in Maryland, DC, and Virginia who are ready to stop guessing and start getting answers. My clients typically fall into one of two groups:

Women Dealing with
Health Challenges

You have been through the conventional system and are still not feeling well. You have been told your labs are normal, tried elimination diets, seen multiple specialists, and are frustrated. Sound familiar?

  • I am losing weight on a GLP-1 medication but I don’t have any support to make sure I am creating healthy diet and lifestyle patterns to be healthy and strong.

  • I have had chronic diarrhea for a year and am under the care of a gastroenterologist but am not getting any better. I feel weak, confused, and hopeless. I need to understand what is wrong and how to fix it.

  • I have noticed my brain is not working as it used to and I am worried about cognitive decline. I want to understand what I can do now to protect my memory.

  • I have been unable to lose weight regardless of what I eat or how much I exercise and my doctor says I am insulin resistant. I am tired of feeling tired, hungry, and stressed.

  • Everything seems to be going wrong. I cannot wake up in the morning, cannot fall asleep at night, and am anxious about my anxiety and stressed about my stress.

  • My cholesterol is high and my doctor says I have six months to change my diet or go on medication. I want to make changes but do not know where to start.

  • My constipation is ruining my life. I am bloated, in pain, and my doctor said my colonoscopy was normal and I should take a laxative. I want to understand why and how to heal my gut.

These are the types of concerns I help with every day. If you are ready to feel better, look better, and get empowered about your personal health care, I am ready to help.

Women Who Are Healthy and Want to Stay That Way

I absolutely love it when patients come to me from this place. Some people are wired to think preventatively. Others arrive here after a personal health experience or a family member's diagnosis. Either way, if you are the kind of person who wants to optimize for the sake of being your best, I have got you covered.

When we work together in this preventative mindset, I help you identify your non-negotiables -- the habits that are the key to showing up in life the way you want -- and then we use testing to identify predispositions, subclinical nutrient deficiencies, and imbalances in gut function and stress response that are worth paying attention to.

Through nutrigenomic interpretation, we can find very specific ways to optimize your health habits: which type of exercise is best for your genes, whether caffeine is your friend or foe, how your particular hunger hormones work, and how to optimize your cellular function so your biochemistry is working for you, not against you.

Cognitive health is a particular focus of my preventative work. Dr. Dale Bredesen, neurologist and author of The End of Alzheimer's, emphasizes that by the time cognitive symptoms reach a doctor's office, the underlying imbalances have been developing for decades. It is in our 40s and 50s that we need to take action to protect our cognition in retirement.

As a ReCode trained and certified practitioner, I have particular expertise in cognitive health and bring this advanced training to all of my patients.

When you work with me in this preventative mindset, you can feel relieved knowing you are doing your best to feel your best today and age gracefully in the decades to come. That knowledge alone can reduce stress and anxiety around health immensely.
